Wairarapa’s new private hospital build gets resource consent

Wairarapa’s new private hospital building has been granted resource consent by local and regional councils.“It’s been a robust process,” says Board chair Dr Colin Hutchison.
“Working with the councils, Ngati Kahungungu and Rangitane o Wairarapa Iwi, we have landed a design that meets the needs of the community and the clinical staff. Our plans both enhance and protect the land we are building on.
”The plan includes 3 operating theatres, 8 theatre recovery beds, 14 inpatient beds, 16 day-stay unit beds, 10 consulting rooms, a physio and gym, and endoscopy, eye and radiology suites. The large day-stay unit will be used for a number of types of surgery and investigations such as endoscopy and cataract surgery.
The radiology suite will include ultrasound, Xray and MRI facilities.“Bringing MRI to the Wairarapa will mean far greater convenience for residents, who currently have to travel to Hutt, Wellington or Palmerston North for this diagnostic procedure,” says Dr Hutchison.
The initial hospital design was modified to protect and enhance a small wetland area bordering Te Ore Ore Road and flowing into Henley Lake. The revised design turns this wetland area into a feature for patients and visitors.
The new building is projected to open in Q3 -2027. Selina Sutherland Hospital will vacate their current lease at Wairarapa Public Hospital and relocate over the road to the new site. “In the interim we are steadily building the range and scope of services provided at Selina Sutherland Hospital, in anticipation of our move,” says Selina Hospital Manager Vicki Bulmer.
“The new hospital has been designed to enable future capacity expansion when demand for service out-grows current capacity. We will continue to value our long relationship with the public hospital and work closely with them to grow services and capacity to help meet the growing needs of the Wairarapa community”.

Background

In February 2024 Selina Sutherland Hospital went into partnership with a group of local doctors, backed by the expertise of Matua Healthcare Group.
This group has supported local clinicians to set up private hospitals and surgical healthcare facilities in Hastings, Napier, Hawkes Bay, Whanganui, Dunedin and Palmerston North.

The focus on local ownership doesn’t stop at Board and investor levels. Local architects Silverwoods drafted the concept plans, Callum Sutherland from TCM is the local Project Manager, and a number of local planning experts assisted with the planning and there is an emphasis on using local contractors for the build.
